Was a 'Family of Sasquatches' Really Spotted by an Arizona Highway Camera? Probably Not.

"We might have spotted a family of sasquatches..."

The Arizona Department of Transportation kicked off 2015 by igniting a firestorm of rumors and conspiracy theories.

The government agency posted on its official Facebook page a photo capturing a group of mysterious animals roaming near a highway.

"We might have spotted a family of sasquatches on SR 260 near Heber this afternoon. What do you think?" the caption read.

Almost immediately, rumors started swirling. Hundreds of comments poured in and the photo was shared more than 3,000 times.

However, speaking to ABC News, department spokesman Tim Tait said the post was just intended to be humorous.

"We always try to have a little fun with our Facebook and Twitter feeds," he said. "That way, we don’t just post news about crashes and road conditions, but a little something to engage our audience in different ways."

"This posting was one of those efforts – something that caught our attention, and we thought it might make some people chuckle," Tait added.
