Stars and Stripes Publishes Brian Williams Interview Five Days Later — But Why Did They Sit on It?

The military newspaper that first reported on Brian Williams' false Iraq war story avoided publishing audio of the full interview with him until five days later.

But why?

Appearing on CNN Monday afternoon, the reporter who conducted the interview, Travis Tritten, provided an explanation.

“The reason we decided to publish it now is because Williams has, I guess, backed out of this appearance on 'The Late Show with David Letterman,'” Tritten said, referencing the "Nightly News" anchor's decision that was announced Sunday.

“We felt there was a lot of interest out there to hear him, in his own words, really address these questions and hear his responses, unfiltered, so we’ve decided to put up the full audio, much of which was never published, so that everybody can listen for themselves and judge," Tritten added.

CNN's Brooke Baldwin pressed the Stars and Stripes reporter again on why the full audio wasn't published last week, considering the gravity of the story.

“We are five days after and Williams has not yet come forward and answered questions,” Tritten said. “He has made statements on his own, but he hasn’t sat and answered questions about it. So we thought this would be valuable."

Williams has been the center of controversy after it was revealed a 2003 Iraq war story he had repeatedly told was not in fact true.
