MOBILE, Ala. (TheBlaze/AP) — One sailor was rescued but four are still missing after several sailboats participating in a regatta capsized during a storm in Mobile Bay, the Coast Guard said.
Petty officer Carlos Vega said the Coast Guard is searching for the missing.
Image source: WALA-TVA storm rolled into the area as more than 100 sailboats and as many as 200 people were participating in the Dauphin Island Regatta on Saturday afternoon.
Dauphin Island Mayor Jeff Collier told Al.com that at least one person was confirmed dead, but he did not know the cause.
Many people needed to be pulled from the water after their boats capsized. "All we could do is hang on," one survivor told WALA-TV. The Coast Guard is using boats, an airplane and two helicopters to help search.
