Police Officer Smashes Window to Rescue a 'Baby,' Then Makes This Discovery

A New Hampshire police officer recently broke the window of a car to rescue what he thought was an infant left in a hot car but was actually a lifelike baby doll, according to WMUR-TV.

Last month, Keene police Lt. Jason Short responded to a call about a baby abandoned in a hot car in the parking lot at a busy shopping plaza.

“I got there as soon as I could,” Short told WMUR. “I don't know how fast I was going, but it was quick.”

Short said he saw what he thought was an infant in the car.

“It was draped with a light blanket, and I could see little feet out with the non-soled shoes and a bottle of milk,” he said.

Fearing for the baby’s life, Short said he shattered the window with his baton because it “looked lifeless, looked dead.”

He attempted to resuscitate the baby when he realized there was a problem.

“And I went to put my finger in its mouth and it was all resistance,” he said. “And I'm like, 'This is a doll.'”

The “baby” was actually a “reborn doll,” which are manufactured to look exactly like a real infant.

According to WMUR, the doll belongs to Carolynne Seiffert of Brattleboro, Vermont, who said she owns about 40 similar dolls, which she began to collect several years ago after the death of her son.

Seiffert told WMUR in a statement that she is embarrassed by the ordeal and upset about the damage to her car, adding that the police department has promised to pay for the damage to her car.

Short said he has no regrets.

“I would never assume that it's a doll,” Short said. “I would always assume that it's a child. I would never do anything different.”
