White nationalist robocall in deep red swing state claims Evan McMullin is a 'closet homosexual

Thousands of Utah voters are getting robocalls this week from a self-described white nationalist claiming that independent candidate for president Evan McMullin is a "closet homosexual."

About 193,000 voters in the deeply red conservative stronghold are expected to receive the calls, KSTU-TV in Salt Lake City reported. The calls cost roughly $2,000 and are being paid for by the pro-Donald Trump American National Super PAC.

The Trump campaign, however, has condemned the recording.

Hello, My name is William Johnson. I am a farmer and a white nationalist. I make this call against Evan McMullin and in support of Donald Trump. Evan McMullin is an open borders, amnesty supporter. Evan has two mommies. His mother is a lesbian, married to another woman. Evan is OK with that. Indeed, Evan supports the Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriage. Evan is over 40 years old and is not married and doesn’t even have a girlfriend. I believe Evan is a closet homosexual. Don’t vote for Evan McMullin. Vote for Donald Trump. He will respect all women and be a president we can all be proud of.

McMullin, who in a recent Emerson College poll had more support among Utah voters than either Republican Donald Trump or Democrat Hillary Clinton, responded to the robocall in a tweet sent out on Monday.

"Another desperate attack from GOP nominee @realDonaldTrump and his racist supporters as he continues to lose ground in Utah," McMullin tweeted.

"Utahn's won't be fooled," McMullin wrote in a separate tweet.

McMullin told KSTU that he was raised in a traditional Mormon family in Utah but that his parents are now divorced and his mother is married to another woman.

"We disagree on the issue of homosexuality, of gay marriage, but I love her very much. She is one of my best friends," McMullin said. As for his own sexual orientation, McMullin flatly denied the robocall's claim.

"The truth is I'm straight," McMullin said.

The 40-year-old former CIA operative further told the Salt Lake Tribune he is "hopeful and optimistic" that he will soon have a spouse.

"My greatest aspiration is to be a husband and father," he said.
