After 'shocking' Trump win, some professors give students 'time to cope' with 'anxiety and terror

Figuring students are having a difficult time processing the phrase "President-elect Trump," some college professors canceled classes Wednesday — the day after Republican Donald Trump's victory over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

An Iowa State University student posted a copy of a note she received from one of her professors: “Due to the emotional response by a large number [of] students as a result of last night’s election I have decided to cancel class and to postpone the quiz until Friday."

The prof — calling the election a "life-changing event, there is no question” and "[m]aybe one of the most shocking events in our history" — added: “I think many of you will need some time to cope due to the polarizing nature of the campaign."

Jon Victor, editor of the Yale News, reported that an economics professor went a step further — making a midterm exam optional after "getting many heartfelt notes from students who are in shock over the election returns":

A University of Connecticut professor wrote in an email to her students that “[b]ecause I know this process has been difficult for many of you (emotionally and mentally), I wanted to let you know that I’m not taking roll in class tomorrow,” Campus Reform reported.

“Depending on how attendance works out, we may adjust the schedule and use Wednesday’s class as a review day,” the professor's email added, the outlet said. “However, if you feel like you need to take a personal day, I absolutely understand that as well.”

A University of Rochester professor reportedly canceled all his meetings with students following the election.

“To be perfectly honest, I have a hard time justifying today sitting face-to-face with you and saying with a straight face: ‘Yes, some of our lives and livelihoods are literally in more danger today than they were yesterday, but hey-let’s talk about your thesis statement,’” the professor wrote, Campus Reform said.

Here's how one student put it after hearing her class was canceled:

"So since there's a protest going on at my campus and my teachers have cancelled class today it looks like I'm taking this day to complete my Final Essay for Women and Gender Studies and to try and cope with a Nation ruled by Trump," another student wrote on Facebook. "It's not going to be easy..."

"Now I know why my journalism professor cancelled class for tomorrow," another student noted. "He's for Hillary Clinton, and now I see the anxiety and terror that may arise from the outcome of this election."
