Philadelphia's mayor does a little song and dance after learning Philly's still a sanctuary city
June 07, 2018
After a federal judge ruled Wednesday that the administration of President Donald Trump can't halt grants to Philadelphia over its "sanctuary city" status for illegal immigrants, Philly's far-left mayor did exactly what you might expect ... kinda.
Yes, Mayor Jim Kenney broke out in a little song and dance with his chief of staff, letting loose with "[we] are a sanctuary city, yeah!"
More from The Associated Press on the ruling:
U.S. District Judge Michael Baylson said in his ruling that the conditions the federal government placed on the city in order to receive the funding are unconstitutional, "arbitrary and capricious." He also wrote that Philadelphia's policies are reasonable and appropriate.Philadelphia has said it will turn over immigrants to Immigration and Customs Enforcement only if the agency has a warrant signed by a judge.
The federal requirements included allowing Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers access to prisons to interview people of interest, providing advanced notice of release of those people and following rules prohibiting restrictions on disclosure of any person's immigration status.
What else has Kenney been up to?
- Kenney was particularly busy this week, also noting that he stands for the national anthem because he’s a “privileged white male" and calling Trump a "fragile egomaniac obsessed with crowd size" over the president's decision to rescind the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles' invitation to visit the White House because the team decided to send only a handful of players.
- After police confirmed that a suspect who attempted to “execute” a Philadelphia police officer in 2016 claimed to have done so in the name of Islam, Kenney told reporters the attack wasn't connected to Islam in any way.
- Kenney was also behind an unpopular city tax on sugary drinks that debuted in 2017.
