Watch: Incredible bodycam footage captures the moment hero cop rescues a man from burning car

An Atlanta police officer rescued a man from a burning car Sunday, and the bodycam footage captured the entire incident.

What are the details?

According to WAGA-TV, a car's engine burst into flames after the vehicle hit a metal utility pole early Sunday morning.

In the bodycam footage, an officer can be seen approaching the crash site and attempting to put out the engine fire with an extinguisher. The officer later extracts the trapped passenger, but is unable to put out the fire completely. In the video, black smoke can be seen billowing inside the vehicle.

The outlet reported that the officer who freed the trapped passenger suffered scrapes and bruises and noted that three people were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta in connection with the crash.

WSB-TV reported that people in the area attempted to free the trapped passengers, but were unable to do so.

The crash is still under investigation.

What did the department say about the incident?

In a statement to WAGA, the Atlanta Police Department said:

We are extremely proud of the actions of these officers. They acted quickly and with determination and ultimately were able to remove the passenger before he sustained further injury. We are also thankful for the actions of the citizens who stopped and assisted immediately after the accident. This accident could have been much worse than it was where it not for the actions of the citizens and officers who put aside concern for their own safety and acted to help those in need.
