81-year-old man attacked in New Jersey grocery store for wearing MAGA hat

Police are still searching for the suspect.

An 81-year-old New Jersey man wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat was attacked and beaten while shopping for groceries Monday afternoon, according to officials.

What's the story?

The elderly man was confronted by the alleged attacker about his hat at about 3:30 p.m. at the ShopRite supermarket in Franklin Township in Somerset County, prosecutors said Tuesday in a news release. The injured man's identity has not been released.

"I think that's very disgusting," shopper Carlos Mendez told WNBC-TV. "The person that attacked him is a coward."

The man suffered minor injuries from the attack, and he reportedly declined treatment.

"I'm kinda speechless," a female shopper told WNBC. "It's upsetting that things are happening like this to innocent people who are just out minding their business whatever you're wearing, it's your decision."

Was the suspect caught?

Police are still searching for the suspect and it's not yet clear whether or not the attack was captured on video surveillance cameras at the store. It's also unclear if any of the store employees witnessed the assault.

Additional details about the attack have not been provided by prosecutors.

The Somerset County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit and the Franklin Township Police Department are continuing to investigate the incident, according to the release.
