Several Democrats are inviting pro-abortion activists to the State of the Union address, including an abortion doctor, to highlight their efforts to secure abortion rights.
Democratic Rep. Katherine Clark of Massachusetts said she invited Boston abortion doctor Cheryl Hamlin as her guest to President Joe Biden's speech.
Democratic Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts is bringing Kate Dineen, an abortion rights activist to the speech while Rep. Madeleine Dean of Pennsylvania, also a Democrat, is bringing Kelsey Leigh, a woman who had an abortion at 22 weeks over the child's “severe fetal anomalies."
Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz of Florida, a Democrat, said in a statement that she was inviting a woman she called a "a victim of extreme MAGA Republican policies that focus on Florida culture war distractions and attacking women and minorities." In her statement she claimed that Anabely Lopes was forced to travel to Washington, D.C., from Florida in order to obtain an abortion "after genetic testing revealed a deadly fetal anomaly."
First lady Jill Biden is also bringing a pro-abortion activist from Austin, Texas, as her guest.
Biden is expected to push the issue of abortion after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down federal abortion rights in the controversial Dobbs decision in June 2022. The issue took center stage in the midterm elections, when Republicans retook the U.S. House of Representatives by only a slight margin.
Critics of the State of the Union note that the ostentatious pageantry of the event was invented by Woodrow Wilson. Despite the Constitution calling for the report from the president, prior to Wilson's meddling, the State of the Union address was delivered to Congress as a written report with no public speech.
