Q&A: Activist Mommy Elizabeth Johnston on the upcoming 'Day of Mourning' event following New York's new abortion laws

'Women used to celebrate motherhood and find joy in their children'

Thousands are expected to gather for the "Day of Mourning" event in Albany, New York, in response to the recent expansion of the state's abortion laws that allow a woman to terminate her pregnancy up to the moment of birth.

"Women used to celebrate motherhood and find joy in their children. Today, in places like New York City, they are taking joy in destroying their children," the event's website reads. "The state of New York has crossed a line of inhumanity that should drive us to our knees."

Elizabeth Johnston, who's also known as the Activist Mommy, will be among the event's featured speakers Saturday at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany.

The mourners will gather to pray and worship "right underneath the statehouse of New York, where the gruesome infanticide law was signed and celebrated," according to the website. "We will give the preborn the solidarity they deserve."

Johnston is a mother of 10 and pro-life activist and blogger who uses her voice to speak out about sensitive social and moral issues concerning faith and family values.

"My oldest [child] is 20 and my youngest just turned 3. And I have 6 babies in heaven through miscarriage," Johnston wrote in an email to TheBlaze.

TheBlaze recently caught up with Johnston to learn more about her involvement with the "Day of Mourning."

Here's what she had to say:

Q. What does the "Day of Mourning" mean to you as a mother?

A.As a mother, I am concerned that my children and future grandchildren are growing up in a nation where children are being dehumanized. A nation which kills its children won't last long.

Q. What does the event mean to you as a Christian?

A.As Christians, we should be following the example of heroes in the Bible, like Moses and Esther, who stood in the gap and interposed for their people during times of looming judgment. I love the concept of the "Day Of Mourning" because it is God's people standing in the gap for our nation through prayer and repentance.

Q. What would you like to say to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) if he showed up at Saturday's event?

A. Cuomo, and every governor who turns a blind eye to child killing, should resign immediately for being an accomplice in the crime of murder.

I'd also tell him that he had better fall on his face before God and repent for the blood that is on his hands.

Jesus said, "What you do unto the least of these, you do unto me."

Q. How many people will be attending the event?

A.So far, 3,500 have registered and maxed out our venue. I believe more than 5,000 will probably show up. We are looking for a local church to help us to accommodate the overflow crowd for livestreaming the event.

In addition to the Albany event, there are 21 cities that will be simulcasting the live event.

Q. What else do you want people to know?

A.This is not a political event or a pep rally. It will be a very serious time of worship and prayer and repentance.

God promises us, "If my people, who are called by my name, humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and heal their land," (2 Chronicles 7:14).

What else?

The event organizers have called on participants to show their support on Saturday by wearing black, refraining from shopping, closing businesses, and repenting for abortion.

Speakers will include twin brothers and authors, David Benham and Jason Benham; the founder of pro-life ministry Love Life, Justin Reeder; author and speaker David J. Harris, Jr.; along with several others.

Editor's note: Some of Johnston's responses were edited for clarity and/or brevity without changing the context.
