Alabama judge allegedly shot by his son after domestic dispute turned ugly: Report

A well-known Alabama judge was injured on Saturday after a domestic disturbance turned into a shooting at his home. The judge's son was arrested and taken into custody following the incident, according to Fox News Digital.

Khalfani Ahmed Hardwick, 36, reportedly shot his father, Montgomery County Circuit Judge Johnny Hardwick, after what started as a domestic disturbance resulted in Khalfani shooting his father.

The authorities arrived on the scene around 1:00 p.m. The New York Post reported that Khalfani fled the scene in his truck after he allegedly shot his father. However, he was found by the police just 45 minutes after the incident. Montgomery County Sheriff Derrick Cunningham said, "I am just asking that we continue to pray for the judge."

Khalfani has remained in jail on charges of first-degree domestic violence and felony "pistol certain person forbidden," according to online records.

Khalfani reportedly has a history of violence. He was charged with attempted murder in 2017. After not showing up to his trial in 2016, he agreed to plead guilty to shooting Clayton Riley in the back of the head in 2014. However, the charge was downgraded to second-degree assault.

Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed responded to the news that Johnny had been injured in a shooting, saying: "Tamika and I are saddened by the news that Judge Johnny Hardwick has been shot. He has honorably served our community on the Circuit Court for decades, helping spearhead numerous reforms to make the court system more equitable and fair."

"Most recently, he worked to eliminate bond requirements for more nonviolent offenses. Away from the bench, he was a champion for the area’s youth, one of the founders of 100 Black Men of Greater Montgomery. We are praying for his recovery."

Montgomery County Commission Chairman Doug Singleton said "[o]ur thoughts and prayers are with Judge Johnny Hardwick during this difficult time."

"The entire Montgomery County Commission wishes him a full recovery. We’d also like to thank the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office on their quick response."

It is not clear what started the dispute between the elder Hardwick and his son.

Johnny graduated from Alabama State University, and he has served as a circuit judge since 2001. He also serves as the president of the Alabama Association of Circuit Court Judges.
