Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis apologize for 'pain' caused after writing letters to judge in support of convicted rapist Danny Masterson

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis — famous for their roles on "That '70s Show" — issued a public apology on social media after it was revealed they wrote letters of support on behalf of Danny Masterson to the judge presiding over the sexual assault trial.

Kutcher and Kunis, who have been married since 2015, starred alongside Masterson in the hit sitcom show that ran from 1998 to 2006. On Saturday, the two appeared together in a post shared to social media, claiming to be sorry for issuing statements that apparently caused pain to Masterson's victims.

"We are aware of the pain that has been caused by the character letters that we wrote on behalf of Danny Masterson," Kutcher said, seated beside his wife.

"We support victims. We have done this historically through our work and will continue to do so in the future," Kunis added.

"A couple of months ago, Danny's family reached out to us and they asked us to write character letters to represent the person that we knew for 25 years so that the judge could take that into full consideration relative to the sentencing," Kutcher said.

"The letters were not written to question the legitimacy of the judicial system, or the validity of the jury’s ruling," Kunis chimed in.

"They were intended for the judge to read and not to undermine the testimony of the victims or re-traumatize them in any way," Kutcher said. "We would never want to do that, and we’re sorry if that has taken place."

"Our heart goes out to every single person who’s ever been a victim of sexual assault, sexual abuse or rape," Kunis said at the end of the video.

Kutcher and Kunis were not the only ones to write letters on behalf of Masterson to Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo, according to Fox News. Masterson's wife Bijou Phillips and "That '70s Show" co-stars Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith also wrote letters.

Fox News apparently obtained Kutcher's letter, which reportedly characterized Masterson as a "role model." Kutcher went on to write that "Danny takes his job seriously. He is kind, courteous, and hard working(sic)."

"He treated everyone from the grips to the teamsters to the actors to the caterers as equals. As a role model, Danny has consistently been an excellent one."

Kunis said in her letter that Masterson had become an "outstanding older brother figure" to her during their friendship. She added that she would "wholeheartedly vouch for Danny Masterson's exceptional character and the tremendous positive influence he has had on me and the people around him."

Masterson was sentenced to 30 years to life after being convicted on two counts of forcible rape. He is currently being held at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Men's Central Jail as he waits on a transfer to a California state prison.

It was reported that Masterson is being checked on every 30 minutes.

Following the sentencing, Masterson's legal team stated that he intends to appeal the court's decision.
