Baby, 2-year-old found abandoned behind empty high school in the middle of summer

A baby and toddler found abandoned behind a Michigan high school are alive today thanks to a driver's training instructor who happened to stop by.

Around 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon, John Belyea, an instructor with the Official Driving School, stopped by Lamphere High School in Madison Heights, Michigan, about 15 miles north of Detroit. The school is one of several meeting locations for the driving school, and Belyea had arranged to switch students there that day. He was supposed to head out again, but before he did, Belyea and a student decided to go inside the school for a bathroom break.

While walking around the back of the school, Belyea heard a noise coming from behind a dumpster, a noise that he initially thought sounded like cats fighting. "Something’s wrong," he said. "So I started making loud noise to scare them off."

Only then did Belyea realize that the sound wasn't coming from cats or any animals at all. "That sounds like a baby," he recalled thinking. Belyea then went to take a closer look and found an infant and a toddler, at least one of whom was strapped in a car seat and covered with a blanket. There was also a note nearby, though the contents of the note are unknown. Belyea immediately called 911.

The children, later determined to be 2 years old and 4 weeks old, were taken to a local hospital and are "deemed to be in stable condition," said Madison Heights police Lt. David Koehler.

Police also confirmed that the children's parents have been identified and that a 20-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the case. However, whether the woman is related to the children is unclear. Child Protective Services have been notified about the two young kids.

Police do not believe that the incident has anything to do with the school district, though many are grateful that Belyea and the unnamed student had decided to meet at that particular school on a weekend afternoon in the middle of the summer.

While some are lauding Belyea as a hero, he credited the younger child with saving his or her sibling. "The one that was screaming, I want to say, kind of saved her brother, sister, or whoever," he claimed, "because if I didn’t hear that noise, I don’t go over around here and see them."

"I know whoever did this had to be in a bad situation," Belyea added. "And I also feel bad for the young kids. I don't know how long they were there for."

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
