Concealed carrier shoots armed robber who's holding his friend at gunpoint and threatening to kill him

A concealed carrier shot an armed robber who was holding his friend at gunpoint and threatening to kill him, officials told WDIV-TV.

The station said details of the incident, which took place in Detroit, were revealed March 10 in a criminal complaint, adding that the shooting took place at 9:53 p.m. Feb. 8.

What are the details?

WDIV said Shot-Spotter detected three gunshots in the parking lot of Carmen’s Delicatessen. The store is located in the 14000 block of Gratiot Avenue.

Two people flagged down police officers who rushed to the scene, the station said.

One man approached officers with his hands over his head saying he has a concealed pistol license and fired a shot in self-defense while being robbed outside the deli, WDIV said.

He added to cops that he and his friend noticed a young man and an older man talking outside the store, the station said. The younger man was wearing a blue Detroit Lions jacket and a ski mask and was later identified as Joshua Fordham, WDIV reported, citing the criminal complaint.

When the concealed carrier and his friend went into the store, authorities said Fordham and the older man followed them, the station reported. As the concealed carrier and his friend left the store and walked to their car, Fordham continued to follow, WDIV said, citing court records.

Fordham began arguing with the concealed carrier and his friend, then Fordham threatened to kill the friend if the concealed carrier didn’t give up everything he had, officials added to the station.

The concealed carrier handed Fordham his wallet, WDIV reported, citing the complaint.

Fordham then patted down the concealed carrier while holding a black, semi-automatic handgun in his other hand, police told the station. But while he was being patted down, the concealed carrier pulled out his gun and fired a shot, authorities added to WDIV.

Detroit police said they found Fordham lying on the ground west of the store with a gunshot wound to his chest, the station reported, adding that a loaded black handgun — later identified as a Ruger P95DC — was on the ground nearby. The gun appeared to have malfunctioned, police added to WDIV.

The station said an officer found the concealed carrier's wallet with Fordham, and police noted that surveillance video showed Fordham motioning his gun toward the concealed carrier's head.

Anything else?

WDIV said Fordham pleaded guilty in March 2014 to armed robbery and a felony firearm violation; he was sentenced to 5 to 15 years in prison for the armed robbery charge and two years in prison for the felony firearm violation.

The station, citing authorities, said since Fordham has been convicted of a crime punishable by more than one year in prison, he's not allowed to have a gun.
