MSNBC and CBS declare Florida a red state, no longer a swing state, after massive victory by Ron DeSantis

Pundits at MSNBC and CBS News declared Florida a firm red state after the massive reelection victory from Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Florida had been considered a battleground state that could swing to either party, but DeSantis won it easily and defeated his Democratic challenger, former Congressman Charlie Crist.

Joy Reid called Florida a red state on a panel of unhappy pundits at MSNBC.

"We're looking at Miami-Dade, looking very much like the rest of Florida," said host Rachel Maddow. "And Florida is starting to look like a red state."

"Well, Florida is a red state!" Reid responded while blaming the conservative Cuban-American populace in Florida. "That county remained Democratic in the '08 and 2012 elections because of one thing: Barack Obama."

Reid said the absence of Obama on the ballot made it harder to turn out African-Americans to the polls and also said that the mask mandate hurt Democrats among business owners who praised DeSantis for keeping Florida open during the coronavirus pandemic.

"A lot of people there liked the fact that he didn't have any COVID restrictions in the state during the pandemic," she added.

Over on CBS News, reporter Tony Dokoupil made the same observation, mentioning the victory from Sen. Marco Rubio over his Democratic challenger as well.

"The big storyline, I think, is right here in Miami-Dade County," Dokoupil said, "which had been solidly blue for decades. Tonight, both Marco Rubio and Ron DeSantis won Miami-Dade County after losing it in their last election. And with Ron DeSantis in particular, he transformed the electorate into supporters for him after losing groups back in 2018 and only narrowly winning."

He went on to point out DeSantis won female voters and Latino voters after losing both demographics four years ago.

"We're not saying there's a red wave nationally, but here in Florida, which had been the premier swing state," Dokoupil concluded, "this is no longer a swing state. Florida is red."

Far-left publication Mother Jones also credited DeSantis.

"Florida can kiss its status as a swing state good-bye. Ron DeSantis has officially made the Sunshine State red," it tweeted.
