Father shoots, kills daughter's ex who allegedly attacked her

A Florida man is dead after an incident at his ex-girlfriend's apartment turned violent.

Early on Saturday evening, the unnamed Florida man arrived at his ex-girlfriend's residence at The Polos of Gainesville apartment complex, just a few miles from the campus of the University of Florida. While there, he "physically assaulted" the woman and then "fled," a report from Gainesville PD said.

After the alleged assault, the female victim then contacted police and, apparently, her father. About a half-hour later, the suspect returned to the woman's apartment, but the father was there, and he had brought a handgun with him. The suspect then "made entry" into the apartment, where the father shot the suspect, striking him in the chest.

The suspect then tried to flee the area once again but managed to make it only to his vehicle, where police later found him. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

None of the individuals involved in the incident have been named, and no one has been arrested. The investigation into the shooting and the domestic battery allegations remain ongoing. It is unclear whether the woman was at the apartment when her ex was shot and whether the shooter legally owns the handgun used in the incident.

Meanwhile, other residents in the complex have expressed shock that such violence erupted in their own community.

"Everyone I speak to here is so nice," stated a resident identified only as Cona. "...[E]veryone I interact with is so genuine and kind, so it was one of those things where it’s definitely out of the blue."

Cona stated that while he's concerned about the shooting, he would need "need a lot more details on what happened" before he would consider relocating. "It seems like it was a random thing because this doesn’t happen all the time," he said.

Another resident, Dalton Graham, stated that he believes the area remains safe. "I thought that you had the wrong Polos or something," Graham said. "I have nothing but good things to say about the university and the city in general, and especially The Polos apartments. Never really had anything like this, so it was pretty shocking.

"I’m literally walking around in my slides and my pajamas," Graham continued. "That’s how safe I feel around here. I don’t feel like I need to be concerned about anything like that."
