Georgia couple arrested after their 10-year-old son was found emaciated and weighing what a 4-year-old should

A couple in Georgia is being accused of intentionally trying to starve their 10-year-old son to death after he was found trying to buy food in a dangerously emaciated state.

On May 12, the child was found wandering in a neighborhood in Griffin by neighbors who said he told them he wanted to go to a Kroger grocery to get food, police said.

Griffin police responded to the report and found the boy weighed only 36 pounds, which is about average for a 4-year-old child.

On a recording of the 911 call, obtained by WSB-TV, a neighbor told the police that the boy had asked them not to tell his parents. He also allegedly told police that he didn't want to return to his home.

On Tuesday, prosecutors made even more shocking accusations against the parents, Tyler and Krista Schindley, in court.

“It appears from the evidence that their intent was to make sure that he was not known by the community and that when he died, there would be no one that would pay any attention to that,” prosecutors said. “There would be no one that would even know he was gone.”

Prosecutors argued against a bond for the parents based on the possibility of a flight risk due to their financial gain from being foster parents to five children before adopting them. The judge denied bond for both suspects.

The child was not identified. Prosecutors told the judge he was being treated for malnourishment and a low heart rate.

Griffin Judicial Circuit District Attorney Marie Broder called the case "disturbing" in a previous media briefing.

"As a mother, I can't comprehend it," Broder said. "But as a human being, it breaks your heart. We aren't releasing any photos of this child for obvious reasons, but I will tell you the photos are absolutely horrible and anyone with a human heart that looks at them should be shaken to their core. I certainly was."

The couple was charged with a slew of crimes, including criminal attempt to commit a felony, cruelty to children, false imprisonment, and simple battery.
