Ilhan Omar fails to heed warning from AOC, gets caught spreading false claims of 'child genocide' in Gaza

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) was caught spreading misinformation about the Israel-Hamas war over the weekend.

On Saturday, Omar reposted a post on X showing dead children wrapped in white cloth. The post declared, "CHILD GENOCIDE IN PALESTINE ... 614 Palestinian children murdered by the Israeli IOF Forces."

But the heartbreaking photo was not taken in Gaza. In fact, the photo is a decade old and shows child victims of a sarin gas attack launched by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's military forces in eastern Ghouta in August 2013.

Omar later — and quietly — deleted her repost. It no longer appears in her feed on X.

The Minnesota Democrat spread the false information just days after Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) decried the level of misinformation being spread on social media about the Israel-Hamas conflict.

In a social media post, Ocasio-Cortez offered advice that Omar apparently failed to heed: Verify information before spreading it.

"The level of misinformation in all directions at this moment is incredibly high, especially on this platform," Ocasio-Cortez said. "If you see a claim, photo, or video that triggers a strong emotional reaction, take a moment to pause and check for veracity/confirmation from multiple sources."

Despite Hamas' brutal attack against innocent Israelis, Omar has been heavily critical of Israel's full military response.

Last Monday, Omar falsely accused Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant of referring to Palestinians as "human animals" when, in fact, he was referring to Hamas terrorists. She also accused Israel of dishing out "collective punishment, a war crime" on Gaza. There is no evidence of this. On the contrary, Israel takes significant steps — text messages, paper leaflets, etc. — to warn Gazan civilians about forthcoming airstrikes and has urged civilians to move away from future targets.

Earlier this year, Omar was booted from the House Foreign Affairs Committee for her history of anti-Semitic remarks, which had been condemned by Republicans and Democrats alike.

Blaze News reached out to a representative for Rep. Omar but did not immediately receive a response.
