Man charged with attempted homicide after smashing into SUV with 3 children inside on Christmas Eve

The police in Salt Lake City arrested a man after he admitted he attempted to smash his car into a man parked on S. 1100 West on Christmas Eve. The victim was in the process of unloading three children from a vehicle when the incident occurred.

According to KTVX, 51-year-old Michael Norvell now faces charges of attempted homicide, reckless driving, driving under the influence, aggravated assault, failure to stop or yield, having no license plate visible from 100 feet, and failure to perform the duties of a driver after a crash resulting in injuries.

The incident apparently happened around 3:40 p.m. on Christmas Eve, when the victim was parked on the side of the road, unloading three children from a vehicle. The victim was reportedly in town to visit family for the holiday.

Norvell allegedly sped up his car and slammed into the victim's SUV, per the report. Just moments before impact, the victim jumped onto the hood of Norvell's vehicle, which the victim said saved his life. The victim and the three children were not seriously injured in the incident.

Following the incident, Norvell reportedly fled the scene. However, those in the community later helped the authorities find him.

The authorities said Norvell admitted to smashing his car into the victim's SUV. However, they were not able to immediately draw a connection between Norvell and the victim. It has since been characterized as an "isolated event," according to the report.

The police report, according to KUTV, said: "'The victim stated that he did not know [the suspect] and had no prior interaction with him before. ... The victim said he had parked his vehicle and went to get one of his three children located inside the vehicle from their car seats and bring them into the family's home."

The incident was reportedly caught on multiple cameras, according to the affidavit.

"There were multiple different camera angles showing [the suspect] inside his vehicle, parking in the middle of the street, waiting for the victim to exit his vehicle," an officer said.

"The video footage shows [the suspect vehicle] impacting directly where the victim was standing," the officer added.

Footage of the incident has not been released by the authorities, as the investigation is still ongoing.

It is still unclear how long Norvell could spend behind bars if he is found guilty of the charges.
