Man fatally shoots neighbor during dispute over neighbor's dog running loose, authorities say

A Texas man fatally shot his neighbor Friday amid a confrontation over the neighbor's dog running loose, authorities told KHOU-TV.

Eric Lee Elliott, 70, was doing yard work at his home on County Road 2683 around 2:45 p.m. when William Duncan Womack's dog got loose and entered Elliott's yard, the Liberty County Sheriff's Office told the station.

Elliott then told Womack's stepdaughter that if they didn't keep their dog out of his yard, he'd kill the dog, investigators noted to KHOU.

The stepdaughter told Womack what Elliott told her, and then the 60-year-old Womack walked to the street to talk to Elliott, the station said.

Witnesses told KHOU that when the pair met, Elliott kicked Womack in the leg and pulled a gun from his waistband.

Elliott shot Womack once in the stomach with a .45-caliber handgun, and then put the gun in his truck and continued his yard work "as if nothing had ever happened," investigators told the station.

Authorities added to KHOU that Womack's wife and stepdaughter were screaming and trying to call for help during the confrontation.

When authorities arrived at the scene, they found Womack in the street and had him flown to a hospital where later he was pronounced dead, the station said.

The street where the shooting took place is just under 90 minutes northwest of Houston.

What happened to Elliott?

Elliott was arrested, charged with murder, and booked into the county jail after the deadly confrontation, KHOU said. Elliott's bond was set at $1 million, according to jail records.

Investigators added to the station that Elliott and Womack had been in an ongoing neighborhood dispute regarding Womack's dog running loose.
