Mom out helping daughter prepare for prom shot and killed after getting caught in crossfire of nearby gun battle

A Texas mom was shot and killed over the weekend after she was struck by a stray bullet from a nearby shootout.

On Saturday afternoon, Ana Moreno, a 39-year-old mother of three, was out driving around Dallas, Texas, with her daughter Amy Rodriguez. Amy was set to attend her senior prom later that evening, and she and her mom went out to get her hair done and to pick up her dress for the big night. At around 4 p.m., Ana and Amy were driving near a shopping center at the intersection of Bruton Road and Masters Drive in the Pleasant Grove area of the city when, suddenly, men in two separate vehicles began shooting at one another.

Amy later claimed she told her mom to keep going and to flee the area to safety, but her mother made no response. "[S]he fell on me, and when I looked at her I seen blood, and I knew," she recalled through tears.

Reports indicate that Amy quickly exited the vehicle and begged for help. Jacob Faz and his wife were also driving nearby, and Faz ran to see if he could help. "I put the shirt on the wound," Faz said. "I lifted [her mother] up to see if I could get a response out of her, and I couldn't."

Moreno and three men were soon after transported to a nearby hospital, where Moreno was pronounced deceased. The three men remain in the hospital in critical condition. Police have not clarified whether the men were innocent bystanders like Moreno or whether they were involved in the shooting. Police have made no arrests in the case.

"I didn’t care about prom," Amy said while sitting next to her younger sister, Michelle. "I didn’t care about anything. I just wanted her to be OK."

Michelle remembered how excited her mother had been for Amy's prom. "She was like, 'Oh we finally get to see her get ready!'" Michelle said. "And she didn’t even get to see it happen."

"She didn’t deserve it," Michelle continued. "She didn’t."

On Sunday, which also happened to be Mother's Day, family and friends gathered at the site of the crash to release balloons in Moreno's honor. Many of the balloons were red and gold, Moreno's favorite colors. "She loved the color red," Amy said. "Anywhere you would see her, she would have her bright red lipstick, her gold jewelry, she loved those colors."

"[W]e all had such a great bond with my mom," Amy explained, "and it hurts that we lost her so early. "They took her from us. It’s not fair. She had so much potential. She was so outgoing, she was hard-working, she had everything."
