Pelosi says attack against husband will impact her decision about her political future

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told CNN's Anderson Cooper that the recent assault perpetrated against her husband Paul will impact her decision about her political future.

Pelosi has served in the U.S. House of Representatives for more than three decades, and she is currently running for another two-year term. She is the first and only woman to serve as Speaker of the House.

Cooper asked Pelosi if she has made a decision about whether she will retire if Democrats lose control in the House of Representatives during the midterms.

Pelosi said that her choice will be impacted by what occurred during "the last week or two."

Cooper asked the lawmaker whether her choice will be impacted at all by the assault.

"Yes," Pelosi responded.

"It will?" Cooper followed up.

"Yes," Pelosi said.

Last month, Paul Pelosi was assaulted at his San Francisco home — Speaker Pelosi was not in the city at the time of the incident.

The congresswoman's husband underwent surgery following the attack. A statement last month from Drew Hammill, a spokesperson for Speaker Pelosi, noted that Paul Pelosi had been "admitted to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital where he underwent successful surgery to repair a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands." The speaker's husband returned home from the hospital last week.

Speaker Pelosi has claimed that the "planet is on the ballot" during the midterm elections. "I don't know how anybody could say, 'I care about the planet, I think I'll vote Republican.' Oh really?" she said.

Election Day is on Tuesday, though many Americans have already voted early. Democrats are aiming to cling to control in both chambers of Congress.

Billionaire business tycoon Elon Musk has urged independent voters to support GOP congressional candidates. "To independent-minded voters: Shared power curbs the worst excesses of both parties, therefore I recommend voting for a Republican Congress, given that the Presidency is Democratic," Musk tweeted on Monday.
