'Grins and Glocks': North Carolina orthodontist offers free Glock 19 with Invisalign treatments

An orthodontist's office in North Carolina is offering a free pistol or a membership at a local gun range when customers come in to get teeth-alignment procedures performed.

Gladwell Orthodontics in the Wake Forest region of North Carolina has partnered with the Youngsville Gun Club & Range to capitalize on the growing trend of gun giveaways to promote unrelated businesses.

Customers who are eligible for the promotion can get a free Glock 19, which has a value of over $500, or a membership at the aforementioned gun club.

Dr. Jason Gladwell, the owner of Gladwell Orthodontics, said that the promotion is only meant for people on the gun club’s email list.

"This promotion has got a lot more traction and attention than, you know, kind of, we ever thought it would," Gladwell told WRAL News.

"Not everyone that comes into our office is going to be eligible; it’s not marketed to everyone. It is solely designed and marketed for the Youngsville Gun Club and Range," he said. "The promotion is nontransferable. The person who actually gets started with the Invisalign treatment has to actually be the eligible person."

The local outlet spoke with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, along with lawyers who explained that the practice is perfectly legal so long as proper procedures are followed in according with North Carolina's gun laws regarding purchasing and transfers.

"Usually these transactions are coordinated through a licensed firearms dealer to ensure a background check is conducted and the recipient can legally possess a firearm," an ATF spokesperson said.

The gun club owner also noted that customers indeed would likely need to complete the required background checks in person, as well.

Recently, a Florida roofing company ran a similar promotion called the "Roof and Gobble," which offered a free turkey along with an AR-15 rifle with the purchase of a new roof.

The deal was intended to promote family and protection, according to owner Jason Polley, along with increased business.

"The turkey will get you all sitting at the table so you can spend time together. The roof will protect your home, and the AR-15 will protect your family," Polly told NBC2 News in an interview.

After just two days of the promotion, the company had sold eight roofs and received another 50 inquiries about the offer.
