Nancy Pelosi: 'Trump is goading us to impeach him'

'He's just like, taunting, taunting, taunting'

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Tuesday that President Donald Trump is intentionally goading Democrats into impeaching him in order to rally his supporters.

What are the details?

During the "Inside Congress" event sponsored by Cornell University's Institute of Politics and Global Affairs, Pelosi said, "Don't tell anybody I told you this: Trump is goading us to impeach him. That's what he's doing every single day. He's just like, taunting, taunting, taunting, because he knows that it would be very divisive in the country but he doesn't really care. [He] just wants to solidify his base.

"So, we can't impeach him for political reasons," Pelosi continued, "and we can't not impeach him for political reasons. We have to see where the facts take us."

The House speaker went on to say, "In the article of impeachment for Richard Nixon, Article 3 was that he ignored the subpoenas of Congress. That could be part of an impeachable offense. Every day he's obstructing justice by saying this one shouldn't testify, that one shouldn't testify and the rest."

Referring to the president, Pelosi added, "So he's making the case. But he's just trying to goad us into impeachment, and wherever you go, I say to my colleagues: whatever it is, be ready. And whatever it is, we'll be ready. And again, we owe that as a precedent for the future as well."

The Hill noted that Trump suggested over the weekend that special counsel Robert Mueller should not testify before Congress, and the White House instructed former counsel Don McGahn on Tuesday to ignore a subpoena from the House Judiciary Committee.

Anything else?

Throughout her interview at the "Inside Congress" gathering, Pelosi acknowledged that the event was supposed to be non-partisan, and she insisted House Democrats were acting in the best interest in the country through their investigations of the president.

"So, we have six committees who at this present time have subpoenas or plans for subpoenas to get information from the executive branch," the speaker said. "It shouldn't have to be this way. This isn't about Democrats or Republicans, it's about patriotism; it's not about politics it's about patriotism.
