Police arrest 10-year-old girl, say she fatally shot a woman who was arguing with her mother

Orlando, Florida, police arrested a 10-year-old girl on Tuesday and said that she fatally shot a woman who was arguing with her mother.

The child's mother, who remains unnamed at the time of this report, is also in custody, CNN has reported.

What are the details?

The horror unfolded on May 30 when the child's mother and 41-year-old Lashun Denise Rodgers began arguing outside of an area apartment building.

Witnesses said that the child was with her mother — who reportedly punched Rodgers — at the time of the incident. Rodgers, according to her boyfriend, struck the woman in response, prompting the child to pull out a firearm from her mother's purse and shoot "one to two shots" at the 41-year-old woman. The child, according to the report, then shouted, "She shouldn't have hit my momma!"

On Wednesday, The Washington Post reported that the initial dispute occurred over a social media post and noted that the child shot Rodgers in the head.

The child, who also remains unnamed at the time of this reporting, was placed in the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families.

State Attorney for Orange and Osceola Counties Monique H. Worrell said her office has taken the case and will “consider all of the facts, including the age of the child, and all of the surrounding circumstances when making a charging decision.”

“We want to be clear in stating that no charging decision has been made by our office,” Worrell's statement said, calling the incident “one of the most tragic cases I have seen in my 22-year career.”

The Post also quoted Worrell as saying, “This shooting is an unimaginable tragedy that defies easy solutions. Our office will proceed with care, and our primary focus will be on doing whatever we can to support Ms. Rodgers’s family, protect the public, and improve the health of this child going forward.”

The investigation into the incident is ongoing and the child could face a charge of second-degree murder. The child's mother, identified by the Post as Lakrisha Isaac, faces charges including manslaughter by culpable negligence, aggravated assault with a firearm, child neglect, and negligent storage of a firearm.
