'Pride Nite' coming to Disneyland for first time in June, event 'celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community and allies'

“Pride Nite” is coming to Disneyland in Anaheim, California, for the first time in June, the park said Thursday.

What are the details?

Disneyland said the two Pride Nites — June 13 and 15 — are in honor of Pride Month and that the event "celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community and allies."

"It begins with a three-hour pre-party mix-in from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. PT, then the private party runs from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. PT, when guests can ride some popular attractions after regular park hours," the park said. Tickets go on sale April 20 for $139, the Los Angeles Times said.

More from the paper:

Disneyland’s announcement comes as the Burbank entertainment company continues to face backlash in Florida for opposing the state’s “Don’t Say Gay” law.

Florida and its governor, Ron DeSantis, have been in a dispute with Disney since the company opposed a state law last year that prohibits instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity from kindergarten through third grade. Under pressure from Disney employees, Disney’s then-Chief Executive Bob Chapek said he called DeSantis to “express our disappointment and concern” over the bill, which was signed into law last spring.

In response, DeSantis and the state dissolved the special tax district where Disney operates Walt Disney World, Epcot and other resorts, with near complete autonomy.

Anaheim 'Gay Days' organizer weighs in

The Times reported that the park's first-ever Pride Nite comes more than 25 years after “Gay Days” — an "unofficial but immensely popular" event in Disneyland that "attracts thousands of LGBTQ attendees each year."

An organizer of Gay Days Anaheim told the paper that Pride Nite is a "great thing."

“In the wake of everything that’s happening to the country, that Disney is coming out in support of the community and inviting the community in, in this way, I think is a great thing,” Eddie Shapiro told the Times.

He added that “Disney is obviously saying out loud, ‘We as a company are not cowed by [events in Florida],’ nor should they be. I’m glad that they’re saying that," according the paper.

However, Shapiro also pointed out to the Times the irony of Pride Nite after so many years of Gay Days, which started out as an after-hours event.

“I think it’s kind of funny that 25 years later, Disney is ready not to have an unofficial thing but an official thing, and we’re back to having an after-hours, late-night event,” he told the paper.

But Shapiro seemed confident that Pride Nite and Gay Days can coexist, the Times noted, adding that Shapiro said Disney can create lavish, theatrical, LGBTQ-themed productions while Gay Days can host outside events and parties: “I think we will both continue to be able to do things that the other can't."
