Rep. Jamaal Bowman says Sen. Joe Manchin doesn't care about black people, Latinos, immigrants, women, or the poor

Freshman Democratic Rep. Jamaal Bowman of New York claimed that fellow Democratic lawmaker Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia does not care about black people, Latinos, immigrants, women, or the poor.

Bowman made the comments during an appearance on CNN while discussing Manchin's announcement that he will not support passing the Build Back Better plan.

The Biden administration and Democrats have been aiming to ram the proposal through without any GOP support, but in order to do so, they would need all 50 members of the Senate Democratic caucus to vote in favor of passage.

During an interview on Fox News Sunday, Manchin told Bret Baier, "I've always said this, Bret, if I can't ... explain it to the people of West Virginia, I can't vote for it. And I cannot vote to continue with this piece of legislation, I just can't. I've tried everything humanly possible. I can't get there."

Bowman said that he "was infuriated" by Manchin's remarks.

"It went from $3.5 trillion to $1.75 trillion because him, his special interests, his donors, and lobbyists were cuttin' the bill for several months because they did not want this bill to pass. Why? Because this bill disproportionately supports people of color. It supports people of color, it supports women, it supports children, it supports those who are poor and lifts them outta poverty," Bowman said.

"It's tremendously frustrating for me as a black man in America because once again it's an example of Joe Manchin as a white man showing that he doesn't care about black people, he doesn't care about Latinos, he doesn't care about immigrants, he doesn't care about women, and he doesn't care about the poor," the congressman said.
