Family of California councilwoman evacuated after an explosive device is found outside their home

A councilwoman in San Jose, California, said she was "seriously disturbed" after an explosive device was found outside of her home.

Dev Davis and her family were evacuated as a precaution on Tuesday after the suspicious object was found by a neighbor outside their home and the bomb squad responded to the incident.

Some of her neighbors in the Willow Glen neighborhood were also evacuated while the bomb squad removed the object.

Sgt. Christian Camarillo of the San Jose Police Department said later that bomb technicians had confirmed that the object was a homemade "explosive device," but no other information about the device was released.

“These types of devices can sometimes cause injury and, yes, even death,” he added. “So it is always alarming to us, but even more because it is one of our elected officials in the city.”

“This further erodes our democracy and our ability to attract good people to run for public office,” said Davis in a statement.

She claimed that she had no idea who might have targeted her.

Camarillo said there were no arrests and the incident was under ongoing investigation. It is also unclear whether the device was meant to target Davis.

“We are extremely grateful to SJPD for their diligence,” Davis added in a post on her Facebook page. “We are also very grateful to our neighbors for their understanding and support.”

Davis was first elected to the San Jose City Council in 2016 and won re-election in 2020. She also lost a primary campaign for the mayor's office in June.

"My family and I are safe, and that is always going to matter more to me than anything else," added Davis.

"PS to any trolls - I will be reporting you to SJPD if you comment on this post. I am out of patience," she concluded.
