Social media piles on former GOP strategist Rick Wilson after he mocks Melania Trump's 'Be Best' with ‘Be Infected’

Frequent CNN guest and former GOP strategist Rick Wilson took heavy fire on social media after mocking first lady Melania Trump's "Be Best" anti-bullying initiative by saying "#BeInfected" in response to an announcement about ads the first lady was going to record.

At the time of this writing, there are at least 9,415 cases of the coronavirus in the United States, with at least 150 deaths.

What are the details?

On Wednesday, the White House announced that Melania would be featured in public service announcements concerning the spread of COVID-19.

The PSAs, according to CNN, will address the "important ways Americans can protect themselves and those most at risk" from contracting and spreading the deadly disease. The outlet also reported that the PSAs will also feature Surgeon General Jerome Adams, Dr. Anthony Fauci, Dr. Deborah Birx, and other Trump administration officials.

In response, Wilson — an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump — tweeted, "#BeInfected," a clear jab at the first lady's #BeBest campaign.

Following massive backlash, Wilson said that he was clearly not being serious.

"ANYONE who thought I was wishing COVID on Melania is a f***wit," he wrote. "You know full well it was a riff on 'BeBest' and it's [sic] utter failure in the face of her husband's continued role as Global Troll in Chief and National Bully."

"That said," he continued, "fap to your fake-ass outrage all you like. None of your fake outrage will matter in a day or two. None."

Wilson recently made headlines after an inflammatory segment with CNN's Don Lemon in which he, the news host, and New York Times op-ed writer Wajahat Ali mocked Trump supporters as unintelligent and illiterate.

By early Thursday morning, Wilson was still trying to stem the tide of outrage being directed at him over the highly unnecessary tweet.

"As noted several times, it was a play off her failed #BeBest campaign, but the Trump outrage machine needs feeding," he insisted.
