'Make stripping great again!' - Exotic dancers protest against new liberal law in California

A Democratic California state lawmaker found herself caught in a debate between exotic dancers and a porn worker over a new law aimed at the gig economy.

The San Diego dancers were protesting Assembly Bill 5, which has gotten national attention for targeting the "gig economy," including apps like Uber and Lyft.

The bill has passed the Senate and Assembly, and heads to the governor's desk next.

California state Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D) confronted the dancers while cameras rolled in February, and brought along a porn film worker to make the case for the law.

Alana Evans, the president of the Adult Performers Actors Guild, tried to tell the dancers that she started like they did, and equated porn sex work to exotic dancing. They did not appreciate the comparison and booed her loudly.

"You're being fed misinformation. What you deserve is protection," she said.

The exotic workers argued that flexibility in their jobs allowed them to work more, while Evans and Gonzalez argued that employers were exploiting workers to keep their costs low.

Evans later accused the exotic dancers of slut-shaming her.

"As these dancers held signs that said #mybodymychoice their leader slut shamed me for being a porn star while the news was filming... apparently it's not MY BODY MY CHOICE, just theirs," she tweeted.

The California law follows in the spirit of national criticism from many on the left against the gig economy. They argue that the apps are just a way for wealthy corporations to take advantage of workers without the costs associated with regular employment.

One dancer held a sign reading, "Make Stripping Great Again!" at the protest.
