Three 13-year-old boys arrested for car theft — 1 even gets cuffed for stealing a gun. Of 8 charged in Memphis caper and crash, all were underage except 1.

Three 13-year-old boys were arrested for car theft — and one of them even got arrested for stealing a gun — amid a caper and vehicle crash in Memphis.

Of the eight males charged Monday, all of them except one were underage, police said.

What happened?

Officers responded to the 100 Block of Rembert Street at 8:20 am Monday for a report about a 2017 Hyundai Tuscan stolen between 11 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. Monday.

Then just after 2 p.m. Monday officers were called to a car crash in the 2200 block of Madison Avenue. Officers were told eight to 10 armed suspects in a Hyundai were trying to steal another Hyundai, after which the two vehicles crashed and were disabled.

The suspects fled the scene on foot upon seeing approaching officers, authorities said, adding that officers began a search.

With that, police said three suspects were arrested near Union Avenue and East Parkway, one suspect was arrested at Avery near Harbert, and four suspects were arrested in the 2100 block of Washington Avenue.

Officers also found a stolen weapon, authorities said.

The following are the descriptions of the underage arrested suspects:

  • A 13-year-old male charged with automobile theft, attempted auto theft, and evading arrest on foot.
  • A 13-year-old male charged with automobile theft, attempted auto theft, gun theft, unlawful possession of a weapon, and evading arrest on foot.
  • A 13-year-old male charged with two counts of automobile theft along with attempted auto theft and evading arrest on foot.
  • A 15-year-old male charged with automobile theft, attempted auto theft, gun theft, unlawful possession of a weapon, and evading arrest on foot.
  • A 15-year-old male charged with two counts of automobile theft along with attempted auto theft and evading arrest on foot.
  • A 16-year-old male charged with two counts of automobile theft along with attempted auto theft, gun theft, unlawful possession of a weapon, and evading arrest on foot;
  • A 17-year-old male charged with two counts of automobile theft along with attempted auto theft and evading arrest on foot.
