Trump says impeachment would be 'unfair'—but would help him win in 2020

He says Pelosi knows it's true

President Donald Trump said it would be unfair of Democrats to try to impeach him, because he's done nothing wrong—but if they do impeach, they're making his 2020 win that much easier, he told NBC News.

Trump sat down for a one-on-one interview with "Meet the Press" host Chuck Todd, where they discussed a variety of issues including potential impeachment, the Mueller report, and tensions with Iran.

"Why do you think Nancy Pelosi has held off her impeachment caucus," Todd asked Trump.

"Because I think she feels that I will win much easier, and I've been told that by many people," Trump replied.

"Do you think impeachment is good politics for you?" Todd questioned.

"I think I win the election easier, but, you know, I'm not sure that I like having it," Trump said. "Look, I did nothing wrong. I was spied on. What they did to me was illegal. It was illegal on the other side. I did nothing wrong. So, impeachment is a very unfair thing, because nothing that I did was wrong. And if you look at the Mueller report, there was no collusion."

Impeachment still does not have extremely strong support within the Democratic Party. The Hill reported that, as of Friday, 73 Democrats and one Republican support launching an impeachment inquiry.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has continued trying to hold off those yearning for impeachment, saying any impeachment effort would need bipartisan support. She wants the House to continue conducting oversight investigations to uncover more suspected wrongdoing by the president.

The general public isn't overly enthusiastic about impeachment either. According to an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll from the past weekend, only 27 percent of Americans believe there is enough evidence to impeach.
