Pregnant mom is in prison for defending her daughter in 'stand your ground' state
May 08, 2018
Siwatu-Salama Ra holds a concealed carry permit in Michigan, a “stand your ground” state. But the pregnant, 26-year old environmental activist is serving a two-year jail sentence for brandishing her legally purchased, unloaded firearm in an attempt to defend her 2-year-old daughter.
Ra, an African-American Muslim, was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon after a 2017 confrontation with a neighbor outside her mother’s Detroit home. The neighbor, irate over a perceived slight to her daughter, allegedly rammed her vehicle into Ra’s car while Ra’s 2-year-old daughter was still inside.
Ra says that’s why she pulled out her gun, though it was unloaded, and waved it at the woman, who then fled. She immediately filed a report at the Detroit police station claiming Ra was the aggressor. Ra was charged with two counts of assault and a firearms violation and later found guilty on the firearms felony, which carries a mandatory two-year jail sentence.
