Arizona Aftermath: Beck Issues Challenge to American People, Politicians and Media

While Americans are grappling to understand the Arizona tragedy, the absolute vacuum of leadership on both sides is staggering.
We live in a country that has been struck by John Hinckley Jr. and Sirhan Sirhan, Lee Harvey Oswald and Mark David Chapman. And one that’s been hit by terrorists like Timothy McVeigh, the DC Sniper John Allen Muhammad, the Fort Hood killer Nidal Hasan, and 19 highjackers all claiming to be freedom fighters. You’d think we’d understand the difference between madmen and terrorists.
All evidence points to the fact that the assailant from this weekend was severely mentally disturbed. His belief system was not rational by any modern political standard. He was an atheist, believed George W. Bush was responsible for 9/11, feared a global currency, cited the Communist Manifesto as one of his favorite books and thought the Mars rover landing was staged. These are not the opinions of a coherent individual.
Far too often, we have seen in our schools and in our post offices, acts of violence from misfits of society. While we can look for the warning signs, these horrific events will always be with every nation.
Though violence is a human problem, every American citizen can make a personal choice today. Do you believe that Americans, from any walk of life, can convince themselves they are freedom fighters and carry out acts of violence? My answer is yes. If you agree then you must take a clear stand.
Turning these horrific events into an opportunity for a political attack is a very childish response to a very grown-up problem. This is not about winning a political blame game. Atheists are not to blame. Those who hate George W. Bush are not to blame. Those who don’t believe in space travel are not to blame. Jared Lee Loughner is to blame. Period.
This tragedy should not be used as an opportunity to try and bend reality to retroactively place a madman on the other side of the aisle. It should be a time to pray for the victims and their families, a time that we can all come together and state that violence is off limits for all sides in a Republic. It’s a time for us to state with a unified passion that we won’t accept anyone who threatens or actually carries out violence.
Denouncing violence from all sides including your own does not make your movement any less just. To quote Martin Luther King:
But there is something that I must say to my people, who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice: In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again, we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.
I challenge all Americans, left or right, regardless if you’re a politician, pundit, painter, priest, parishioner, poet or porn star to agree with all of the following.
I denounce violence, regardless of ideological motivation.
I denounce anyone, from the Left, the Right or middle, who believes physical violence is the answer to whatever they feel is wrong with our country.
I denounce those who wish to tear down our system and rebuild it in their own image, whatever that image may be.
I denounce those from the Left, the Right or middle, who call for riots and violence as an opportunity to bring down and reconstruct our system.
I denounce violent threats and calls for the destruction of our system – regardless of their underlying ideology – whether they come from the Hutaree Militia or Frances Fox Piven.
I hold those responsible for the violence, responsible for the violence. I denounce those who attempt to blame political opponents for the acts of madmen.
I denounce those from the Left, the Right or middle that sees violence as a viable alternative to our long established system of change made within the constraints of our constitutional Republic.
I will stand with anyone willing to sign that pledge. Today I make a personal choice. I urge leaders of both sides and all walks of life to join me as all Americans joined hands on 9.12.2001.
I believe that we must change ourselves to hold on to our republic. That’s why I have been talking about e4. Enlightenment. Education. Empowerment. Entrepreneurship. It’s a personal solution for all of us to become the people we were born to be, not the people we’ve allowed ourselves to become. I have called for a personal revolution; change ourselves in order to change the world. Those who live with honor and are responsible to themselves and their families will be the key to the future of our Republic, not those playing political games.
While everyone seems to be focused on politics, I instead choose to focus on Christina Green, the nine year old victim killed Saturday. Born on 9.11.2001, she is now a victim of another case of horrific violence. I hope we can all remember Christina by acting the way we did when she was one day old: To focus on values and principles, to use common sense and stop playing politics.

Hey Sarah-stop digging yourself deeper with these stupid excuses like the symbols were actually surveyor tags…..yeah right.
Sarah Palin‘s and Glenn Beck’s words have never been of peace and love. Never!
Sarah Palin sounds like a Democrat trying to weasel out of taking responsibility.
Many of us in the Tea Party view Palin as a loose cannon and she proves us right , again.
We asked her to remove the map because we knew this was not the message that we wanted to be associated with.
And she refused.
She is now reaping what she has sown only all of us in the Tea Party are now paying the price for her arrogance and stupidity.
Hey Sarah, man up and step away from the Twitter and email and stop asking everybody else from FOX News to talk radio to the Tea Party to defend you.
Do it yourself , you’re a big girl , put on your big girl pants and face the media yourself, without hiding behind Glenn Beck and Tammy Bruce.
Otherwise you look like a coward and as we’ve seen before, when the going gets tough,
you run away.

The documentation is abundant and an effort should be made to assemble it ALL for ALL to see. They deserve full credit for the level of vitriol present in America’s political arena today. Posted on January 10, 2011 at 2:13pmI DON’T blame Jared Loughner. He is mentally ill. His brain chemical balance is not normal. Do you blame Reagan for not being coherent when he had Alzheimer’s disease? This kids brain chemistry was probably just as messed up as Reagan’s when he was incoherent. I DO blame his parents, they had plenty of warning and did nothing. I think the parents should be charged with a crime.
LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Jared Loughner’s parents were put on alert by Pima Community College of their son’s mental health issues. Jared Loughner’s parents, Amy and Randy Loughner, received a letter from Pima Community College or around October 7, 2010 of their son’s suspension. In writing the Loughner parents, Pima advised them that their son needed mental health evaluation, promptly.
It remains unknown Sunday if Jared Loughner’s parents ever following the suggestions of Pima’s letter.
To re-enroll, Loughner would have to “obtain a mental health clearance indicating, in the opinion of a mental health professional, [that] his presence at the College does not present a danger to himself or others,” said the Pima Community College suspension letter.

Posted on January 10, 2011 at 2:40pmWell MossBrain what part of 21 years old makes parents responsible for the actions of their son. Although I believe that a child is a “Product” of his family experience and from there you could make that argument but there is no evidence about the Parents so far so we can not know what their attitude is about this situation.
You must let the family of the madman deal with the facts and then let them come to the spotlight if they so feel the need. My/Our desire to know their side is not foremost or Constitutional to know. Privacy, their privacy is what we now need to protect because if they don‘t have privacy then we don’t have privacy.

Posted on January 10, 2011 at 2:46pmFBI officials will tell you that in this type of scanario, the parents are usually at fault because they did nothing to bring mental health intervention to their son/daughter. After Columbine, the FBI considered charging the parents of the two shooters with negligent homicide.
My husband, as a police and prison chaplain, attended FBI terrorist identification training classes in VA. His very first comment after this shooting? “Why is no one pointing to the parents responsibility here?”
Not only is the shooter responsible but his parents as well. Even though the perp is 22, we will probably discover very soon that the negative behavior he’s shown over the past few years will end up going back even farther. This is heart-breakingly sad for his parents on so may levels, but sooner or later they will possibly have to step up to shoulder some of the blame for this nightmare.

Posted on January 10, 2011 at 3:13pmFor years, our family has been targeted by some former acquaintances of my spouse. Once we had to contact the family of one of them and let them know that our next step would be to contact the police. That person has since passed away.
A second nutcase harassed us with phone calls because he happened to see me in the parking lot of a grocery store and took offense. He ultimately made a threatening phone call to the wrong person and is now institutionalized.
The third person drifts in and out of our lives. He’s been quiet the past few years. Please God, may it continue.
The families of these three individuals were well aware of the problems, but patients have rights. They can only be held in psychiatric institutions for so long. Until they step over the line, like the second person eventually did, they can’t be institutionalized and they can not be forced to submit to treatment. Restraining orders are useless. Trust me, the families of those who live in these half reality/half fantasy worlds would love to have their family members functioning as a normal person but it’s just not going to happen. All too often, the family members are the ones that receive the brunt of their mentally ill family member’s anger.
The blame lies squarely with Jared, no one else. Not Glenn, Rush, Sarah, George W. Bush, his parents, his teachers or anyone else. Jared is a murderer, plain and simple. Why he did it is really an esoteric question because it surely isn’t going to bring back any of those who died or make any of the injured recover quicker.
However, those who are so quick to announce that it‘s everyone else’s fault are feeding into the problem simply because they are not recognizing the responsibility of the individual. Actions have consequences and it’s time the talking heads stop slinging mud and grow up.

I suppose it their fault the chemicals in his brain are so abnormal? as stated in your post it remains unknown that they ever followed up with the colleges suggestion. You do realize that Jared is 22 yrs old dont you? He is considered an adult and therefore his parents couldnt FORCE him to do anything. Say they had made him go, they could force him to keep going.. he had no other criminal record for them to use to show the need for forced treatment. If the legal system couldnt force him to go what makes you think his parents could? You are way off base here Mossbrain. Say he had gone and had been prescribed meds.. who could FORCE him to take them? His parents sure couldnt… If this kid were a teenager I’d say you might have a point to your arguement but he is an adult. He is to blame for this. He is responsible for shooting a beautiful 40 yr old woman in the head as well as killing a 9 yr old girl. No one else…

At 16 it’s near impossible and at 18 the only thing that will get them hospitalized is suicidal thoughts/threats. It isn’t as easy as it sounds. The parents could have been more proactive…but…I didn;t walk in their shoes and I do not know what their day to day lives were like. Were they in denial? Wish people would start asking the real questions like, Did the parents not know where to go? Did the College offer assistance in helping? How is the mental health system in AZ? There will probably be a civil war of some kind in this, and other countries, as society continues its slide into the gutter of immorality, greed, rotten politics, and bad religion.

I think people just don’t get it, this isn’t a game, it is our lives. The absolute hypocrisy that I watched on television yesterday from politicians who still want to continue “playing the game of words and finger pointing” was enough to tell me things are not going to change. It wasn’t about the dealth of a 9 year old or the attempted murder of a Congresswoman, it was about how can we use this crisis to help us and our party. If our leaders think and act this way how can things ever change ? They won’t.

Posted on January 10, 2011 at 8:20pmOld Truckers I must agree with you about it’s being too late for this passivist position. I can never figure out how Glenn comes up with some of his ideas, although I know he means well.
America didn’t come into being by signing a petition, or the unrealistic effort to get the enemy to sign a pledge of non-violence. The Progressives intend to take America down, whatever they have to do to accomplish that end. The goal of true, Patriotic Americans should be to stand up for our freedom and liberty the same way, whatever we have to do.
There comes a time when a stand against tyranny can only be accomplished by “violence”. If signing a pledge of non-violence and passivism were the remedy for conflict, then not a single war need have ever been fought by American Patriots. We could have simply challenged Britain, the North and South, Saddam Hussein or Osama Bin Laden to sign a pledge of non-violence with us. I’m positive that any one of those entities would have gladly signed such a petition and proceeded to anihilate us while we stuck to our “word.”
Principles and peaceful proclamations are fine. But unless they are backed by strength and resolve to defend them with our lives, they are useless. This petition is a nice idea but I won’t be signing it.
I just can’t reconcile this nice little cotton candy solution with the historical bravery, strength and resolve of the Founding Fathers Glenn is always teaching us about. “Give me Liberty or Give Me Death” doesn’t sound much like a pledge of non-violence. Neither does ” and to protect from all enemies, both foreign and domestic.”
The Communist/Socialist/Marxist regime that threatens this nation at this time is not interested in a “non-violent” solution except in the event they can take us over with a bloodless coup. Given the lack of courage I’ve seen lately that might be something they consider possible.
However, there will be no successful bloodless coups perpetrated on this country as long as I have any left in my body to shed. Shed it I will before I will allow the freedoms my ancestors fought and died to preserve for me will be taken from me or my family. I’m convinced that the blood of Patriots is still strong in multitudes of people in this country today.
Again, I‘m not trying to take Glenn’s form of comfort from any who find it useful. It‘s a nice gesture but doesn’t give me comfort. My comfort comes with hoping there are enough Americans left with the bravery to defend their country and their freedom, whatever they must do.
There is a great divide between diabolic schemes and noble causes. It isn’t hard to know the difference. The principles on which America was founded are noble ones, worth fighting for. Our founders knew that their battles wouldn‘t be the last ones we’d have to fight. They knew we’d have to do it time and time and time again to keep America true to its values.

Posted on January 10, 2011 at 2:59pm@forestnomad You want an opposing example? See what Glenn said about many such occasions of late. When that nut ran his plane into a building last year (the nut who was clearly spouting leftist rhetoric and quoted Marx), Glenn was the first to say he wouldn’t blame the leftist rhetoric. He said the guy was a random nut. When the guy opened fire on the cops who came to his house last year and it turned out the guy was a Dem, Glenn specifically said he did not blame the leftist vitriol, but blamed the guy who did it.
However, please do look at this opposing example: A man shoots up a bunch of military people yelling the rallying cry of an admittedly extreme representation of a religious sect who has openly accepted responsibility for the act and we are all cautioned not to “jump to conclusions.”
May those of us who call ourselves conservative and who go to open forums held by our legislators at least ask for the same reservations especially when the person to whom the press tries to connect us has not issued any statement orally or in written format that even begins to sound like any of our beliefs?

I choose not to stoop to the level of finger pointing, and most of all violence. I have many reasons why, but a big reason is because I’ve just started reading The Republic by Plato. This is a must read for everyone. I’m only on book 2 of The Republic, but the whole basis of book 1 and on into book 2 is the difference between justice and injustice. This writting by Plato, I feel applies to this tragedy and what the media is doing by trying to place blame on anyone other than the crazy wacko who commited this horrific act of violence. Though it’s hard to follow sometimes (I mean, it’s old) but I would suggest you give it a read and see if it influences your beliefs at all. It has influenced me for sure.

Expecting the media and left of center politicians to bow down and sign his Declaration of Glenneth is not realistic, but it’s about all he can resort to for refuge from the barrage of pointed fingers coming over the walls of Beck Castle.
There’s an 800 pound gorilla in the room, and I‘m not talking about Rosie O’Donnel. The reason why the right is seen as such a threat is simply their numbers. There’s many more conservatives out there than there are radical leftists. Combine the New Black Panther party members, followers of the old and flakey Frances Fox Piven, and the rest of the left wingers that Glenn is always ranting about and there still wouldn’t be enough people to sink a tugboat on the Volga River. When the left starts ranting about revolution, most Americans either ignore them or laugh in their faces. The media understands this, and that is one reason why their crazy rhetoric gets ignored. If it’s the African American population that Beck is really concerned with (which I believe is the case), he should came out and say so. But to expect to get any traction with this latest effort is just plain nuts. Nice try Glenneth.

You may want to rethink that one, Mr. Beck. Do you really think that the goal of “global governance” doesn’t come with a global currency?
Besides, you’ve talked about a global currency on the air before (can’t find the episode right now), and also here “Glenn Beck: No follow up question?” (http://www.glennbeck.com/content/articles/article/196/33218/)

Posted on January 10, 2011 at 5:17pmI agree with this pledge. My fear is that the time is fast approaching when pledges and good motives will be useless. It seems that the wolves are howling for blood. The institutions that have been the strength of our Nation:The family, traditional marriage, our faith in God, and our faith in our political and judicial processes have all been under seige by those who want to fundamentally transform our Nation into something that has no resemblance of what America is supposed to be. We MUST stand firm in what is right. We must be non-violent but we must also defend what is most precious: our families and our children. May God bless America.

Posted on January 10, 2011 at 5:37pm@RCScrolls… It is nice to know that you don’t read past the first five books of The Holy Bible. You read past the books of Moses? Then you are violating a very similar creed found in the first five books. This is a violation? Did you not know that the word “bible” refers to a collection of books. In other words, whatever text refers to this was originally written in a separate text and these were later collected by a bunch of scholars (sometimes funded by the political/religious leaders of the time). So what parts of the Bible are you willing to throw out because of text that says you should be wary of false prophets and angels of the devil? Will anything survive past the five books of Moses?
Sometimes I feel like us “Christians” are no better than those people we have in Congress taking the pledge to defend the Constitution. Hopefully now that our House of Representatives have actually read the Constitution as a symbolic gesture this year, perhaps some of them will begin to understand the founding document of our republic. As for us “Christians,” I don’t know. There is so much variance in interpreting the Bible, that I am not sure any of them will see all but what they choose to see. And do we even thank the Jews? We wouldn’t have this great text without them. When I read people cry foul about the hypocrisy of Christians, I have to think they are both right and wrong at the same time.
For example, the claim is that the Book of Mormon was written before, during, and after the time of Christ. Does that violate the scriptures of the Holy Bible? I mean that sounds consistent with all the books and letters that later were gathered together into the one volume. Or is it just that Joseph Smith said that he saw God and angels, and that is how received and interpreted the Book of Mormon? And if it is that Joseph Smith saw God and angels, then are you saying that in the time of the Bible, God would show himself and his angels to mankind but now God won’t? Are we not the same mankind that killed the prophets back then? Or did you sort of skip over those chapters were the prophets were rejected by their own people? Or perhaps you skipped over the part where Jesus was rejected by his home town? It seems to me that the people most likely to reject Jesus when He comes to earth is not the non-believers but rather those who profess they knew him…. Wait, there is a scripture about that too…. says something along the lines of “I will say to them, ‘depart from me.’” I think I am paraphrasing a reference to the Second Coming or Judgement, something like that.
Here is something I like from the Book of Mormon. Two things.
First, in one story, a religious/political leader (and he was both) sat in judgment when a man was brought before him that killed another man because the two contended over religious beliefs. When he could not win his argument, he took his sword and settled the matter with the sword. I think upon that story and others in the Book of Mormon as well as the Bible and believe that I can stand firm for what is right without raising up a sword. For in this Book of Mormon story, it was the Christian that was slain and the judge essentially declared that if religion were enforced by the sword that it would the undoing of their people. Is this not what Glenn Beck has been saying? Much like Martin Luther King who denounced violence and declared it would undo their work for equal rights, so too we must peacefully stand for what is right, for our freedoms. Likewise, Glenn Beck advises us to be the peaceful and stand united, advising us that violence is what our enemies want so that they can justify their own actions. This almost sounds like Christ’s advice to turn the other cheek.
Now remember, Christ, after composing himself it seems (or setting the example for us), did toss the money changers out of the Temple. So I think it interesting that the Book of Mormon also has a story where the people of the land gathered together to contend whether to be ruled by a system of judges or to be ruled by a king. The leaders of the time describe it as contention with brother arguing against brother throughout the land. It doesn’t sound like just some quiet little chat over wine, but rather much like we are starting to see now where people are coming out and stating strong beliefs with conviction instead of just mildly sitting by. Now in their story, the majority of the people voted for the system of judges. So the voice of the people came for freedom after much contention on the matter, and I feel like this is what we are fighting for. We are fighting for the voice of the people. It could be that the voice of the people today will choose tyranny instead of freedom. I hope the voice of the people will choose freedom in America. Now, I stand by the first story that enforcement of our views by the sword is destructive. What is interesting is in the second story that when the kingsmen as they were called lost the voice of the people, then the kingsmen banded together to wage war on their fellow citizens so that they could place a king over the people. Then they went to war with the sword. So, while we fight for the freedoms of America, remember that we must be peaceful. Not to be mistaken with silent on our beliefs. If, and only if, the people choose the freedoms we seek, only then have we victory and even then we must still not raise up our swords (guns) against our fellow men. We are only justified before God in taking up our swords (guns) to defend ourselves, not to offend (attack) with our weapons of war. So if the majority of America chooses tyranny, I will probably go to jail, prison, a concentration camp or just be on some enemies list somewhere as I have chosen not give up my beliefs in free agency. But if the American people chooses freedom and an enemy within takes up weapons (guns and bombs) against America then I will support the people in their fight for freedom, even if that means I need to relearn how to use a gun–it has been years since I even held a gun let alone fired one (had a close cluster but all far off target).

If there is blame it, rests with governments who cut funds to mental institutions that help and keep unbalanced individuals from harming the public.
Arizona is high on the list of States that believe government has no role in such social programs. This is the prefect example of how letting the private sector do it completely fails because there is no financial interest to help the mentally ill.
Because of right-wing conservative government cuts, there are more crazies on the streets today than ever before. Get used to these unfortunate events.

Government funds come from the private sector, and to use those funds to take care of mental patients is a redistribution of wealth. We have police for peace-keeping, and we have the Constitutional right to keep and bear arms.
More people died in the AZ incident because more people weren’t carrying weapons – and the Progressives love to take our gun rights.

This comment proves that you don’t listen or watch Glenn’s shows directly. You just read the liberal blogs for all your information.
Can you actually say that you don’t agree with the above challenge, which promotes NON-Violence completely?
Glenn’s audiences are (1)not anti-government; we want to save the government as it has been for over 200 years. A Democratic Republic not Socialist Government. (2)Who in the world is not “Pro-gold”? It would not be expensive if everyone didn’t want some of it. (3)Conservatives are NOT anti immigrant! We simply want a legal, organized and fair immigration system like we are intended to have. An open border is simply chaos and an invitation to use illegal immigrants as slave labor. And finally (4) revealing the carefully concealed plans of Communists and Socialist who wish to “fundamentally change the United States of America” is not being a conspiracist. It is called being forewarned and enlightened.

If you count on shooting them for protection, you are not getting at the source. There will always be someone else lurking in the background who should be hospitalized, and these disturbed individuals will more than likely kill a few innocent people before they are taken out by your soldiers.

You start by stating that why the right is seen as a threat is b/c of their numbers. They WAY outnumber leftists radicals. CORRECT.
You state that the media ignores the crazy rants of radical leftists because of how few in number they are (implying they have not power). Probably So.
But then you make a leap assuming that Glenn is concerned about the African American population. HUH? NOT EVEN DUDE!
Let me ‘splain it slowly. THE CONCERN IS OVER THE RADICALS AT THE LEVERS OF POWER BEING GIVEN AN EXCUSE TO USE GOVERNMENT TO ACT AGAINST THE CONSERVATIVE MAJORITY BECAUSE OF THE ACTIONS OF THE RADICAL MINORITY WHO ARE OUTSIDE OF GOVERNMENT.

If Obama did say that, he is mistaken. The American government was decentralized, and the Founders wrote the Second Amendment, for the purpose of granting the People the ability to fight back against a corrupt government.
