Save your skin with these three tallow brands

Why is everyone talking about tallow?

Tallow, which is rendered fat from animals, particularly beef or sheep, has been used traditionally in skin care for centuries, and it’s making a comeback. Its similarity to human sebum makes it well suited for moisturizing and nourishing the skin without causing imbalance or clogging pores. Moreover, emollient tallow contains a variety of nutrients, including vitamins (A, D, E, and K), fatty acids, and antioxidants. These components can contribute to the overall health and vitality of the skin, promoting hydration and supporting skin regeneration, as well as providing a protective barrier that helps prevent moisture loss, keeping the skin hydrated and supple.

It’s effective, and just importantly, it’s clean. No endocrine disrupting, no hidden chemicals. As so many people have begun to question and turn away from corporate food products, the same logic impels them to abandon Big Skin Care. Without further ado, the three best independent American and Canadian tallow brands:

VanMan

VanMan’s mission statement says it all: “Together, we have created a movement with an anti-big pharma message, using our knowledge of holistic health and inspired, soulful remedies that speak beyond the confines of analytics, studies, and ‘science.’ We know what feels good, we know what health is, and we refuse to let anyone manipulate us into thinking otherwise.” The company sells all the basic self-care stuff: tallow, deodorant, lip balm, mouthwash, and toothpaste made from all-natural, clean ingredients that feel seamless on the skin with any of the toxic sludge you find in mainstream products.

Fatskn

When the founder of Fatskn got serious about starting a family back in 2017, she was shocked by how her personal care items were negatively affecting her health. Having researched topics like fertility, digestion, fetal development, nutrients, and supplements, she ultimately determined to make her own skin care, knowing she could trust what was in the formulas she came up with. Caitlin writes, “From the start, I knew I wanted to focus on saturated fats. They’re more stable in structure and far more resistant to oxidation than unsaturated fats. Enter grassfed tallow. This was a no-brainer for me. Highly saturated, loaded with fat-soluble vitamins, and rich in skin-strengthening amino acids. And my skin LOVED IT. Not only did my skin look healthier — it actually was healthier. It retained moisture better, tanned easier, and felt buttery soft.” Fatskn offers a greater variety of skin care products, aimed at women looking for alternatives to the beauty industry.

Shwally

Shwally shares a similar origin story as the others but offers a greater variety of items for families, including natural, safe, comfortable, and attractive play mats for children. The company writes, “Because if your body is absorbing a majority of what you put on it, the products you use should be so clean that you could eat them. As a family, we saw there’s no one looking out for the little guy. So we are. We’re here to help you feel really good about being parents, by creating products that you can feel confident in, knowing they are safe for your baby and look good in your home. Humans originated living in balance with nature, and it’s our goal to get back to that.”
