"Extremely violent."
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say three people were killed in a pileup involving 10 vehicles on the famed Pacific Coast Highway in Southern California.
Newport Beach police Lt. Bill Hartford said three adults from two vehicles were killed in the "extremely violent" crash Saturday, and three others were hospitalized, one of them in critical condition.
Two cars were overturned and some people were trapped inside their vehicles.
Hartford says a pair of vehicles was involved in the initial collision and eight more became entangled in the wreck.
Authorities say the highway remained closed hours after the accident and was likely to be shut down through the night.
The famous highway runs along the ocean through many of California's most scenic stretches and most expensive neighborhoods.
