Mary J. Blige From DNC Stage: 'Let's Get It Crunk For President Obama
September 06, 2012
In her opening performance in front of a packed audience at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., singer Mary J. Blige began a rendition of her hit song by shouting out to the President. However, the shout out sounded a bit strange given the nature of presidential campaigns.
Before performing her song, "Family Affair," Blige asked the audience to stand up. She then shouted to the enthusiastic crowd, "Lets get it crunk for President Obama!" The crowd cheered and began dancing. The opening lyrics of the song matched the shout out:
Let's get it crunk, we gonna' have funUp on in this dancery
We got ya open, now ya floatin'
So you got's to dance for me
Urban Dictionary defines "crunk" as a "Euphemism for getting really crazy on marijuana and alcohol (stoned and drunk. Chronic plus Drunk = Crunk). Or also crack and drunk. Or coke and drunk. Or maybe just being crazy and drunk." However, "crunk" is also used in a more innocent sense to describe feelings of extreme excitement and is sometimes used to pump up a crowd.
