In an age where player safety is becoming an increasing buzz phrase, there are still fights in hockey. It's a tradition of sorts. And on Wednesday night that tradition took a slightly scary turn when one player hit the ice face down and laid unconscious after a fight with an opposing player.
Twenty-six seconds into the game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Ottowa Senators, the Leafs' Frazer McLaren and the Senators' David Dziurzynski went fist-to-fist. It ended fairly quickly after McLaren landed a series of head shots that sent Dziurzynski to the ice and passed out momentarily.
Here's how it looked in pictures:
And here's how it looked in video:
A woozy Dziurzynski was slow getting up and eventually needed help from two teammates to skate off.
He did not return, and the Senators said he had a concussion. He logged a total of 3 seconds in his 10th NHL game.
It's a stark contrast to the other hockey fight from earlier this week that didn't include a single punch.
