An 18-year-old Chicago man has been ordered held without bail after he allegedly hammered a hole into the head of his aunt's boyfriend early on Christmas morning then decapitated and dismembered him, authorities said.

Alexis Valdez had been allowed to live with his aunt and his aunt's boyfriend, 41-year-old Silvestre Diaz-Hernandez, for the last six months — provided he went to school, worked, and contributed financially to household expenses. When Valdez failed to meet those requirements, he was told he needed to leave.

On Christmas Eve, while his aunt was at a party, Valdez was drinking and angry about having to move out. According to the Chicago Sun-Times Diaz-Hernandez came back to the residence then went with Valdez to a store to buy more beer.

Prosecutors said Valdez confessed to killing Diaz-Hernandez with a hammer after the pair returned home, hitting the victim several times in the head until he smashed a hole in his skull, WBBM-TV in Chicago reported.

When Diaz-Hernandez was dead, the Sun-Times reported, Valdez began dismembering the body, playing loud music to drown out any noise, Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Kingsley Sawyers said.

The Sun-Times added that Valdez cut off Diaz-Hernandez’s head, ears, nose and mouth, Sawyers said, adding that he gouged out the victim's eyes with his bare hands. He also cut off Diaz-Hernandez’s arms and sliced his torso from the neck to the pelvis, Sawyers noted.

Then Valdez placed the severed head, ears and nose on his aunt's bed "as he, quote, 'Wanted to leave his aunt a present,'" Sawyers said, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Valdez eventually called 911 to report a dead body, the Sun-Times said, adding that when the 911 operator asked Valdez if he’d tried CPR, “the defendant laughed and told the 911 operator that the victim had been decapitated,” Sawyers said.

According to an arrest report, police who responded to the home after Valdez called 911 on Christmas Day found him sitting in the front yard with an iPad in his hands, the Tribune said. The Sun-Times said he was covered in blood.

When one officer asked, "What's going on?" Valdez replied, "Shouldn't you arrest me before you ask me questions?" The Tribune said the officer then asked why he should arrest Valdez. "Because I just killed a man, and he's in the basement," Valdez said, slamming the iPad to the ground, cracking its screen.

“The defendant also admitted that he was angry with his aunt and the victim, and that if his aunt had come home and seen the victim’s body, then he would have killed her as well,” Sawyers said, according to the Sun-Times.
