Routine Traffic Stop Takes a Turn When the 6-Foot-4, 350-Pound Driver Decided He Didn't Want to Be Handcuffed

“He actually doubled his cuffs up because the guy was so big..."

It began as the most routine of traffic stops.

A cop spotted a driver heading right through a stop sign in Warren, Michigan...

...and the driver quickly pulled over.

But there was nothing routine about what happened afterward.

Police dashcam video shows the officer standing with the driver — all 6-feet-4 and 350 pounds of him — by the driver's side door.

"The officer was going to place him under arrest,” Warren Commissioner Jere Green told WXYZ-TV in Detroit. “He actually doubled his cuffs up because the guy was so big and he attempted to put cuffs on and the guy started to fight him."

TheBlaze asked Warren police on Wednesday why the officer attempted to arrest the driver before the chase but the message wasn't immediately returned.

The video shows the suspect struggling with the officer, reentering the car, sitting in the driver's seat, pulling the officer into the car, and then stepping on the gas, WXYZ stated.

The officer is seen dragged several feet before getting to his feet and then racing back to his patrol car.

From there dashcam video shows the smoky aftermath of the suspect's car clipping another vehicle driven by a man on his way back from lunch, WXYZ reported. The suspect speeds away from the accident scene, soon slamming into parked cars on side streets and then driving down an alley.

"The officer gets out, the bad guy puts the car in reverse, accelerates, and goes toward the officer and the scout car,” Commissioner Green told the station. “The officer fires three shots at that point from his duty weapon."

The suspect was shot twice but still resumed his getaway, finally stopping in Detroit, which is about 18 miles south of Warren.

Police said he was taken into custody and rushed to the hospital, adding that wads of cash and drugs were found inside the suspect’s car.

The officer was taken to a hospital with a back injury; he will be on paid leave while he recovers, WXYZ noted.
