My Daddy's In There!': Firefighters Weren't on the Scene, So a Mystery Man Did Something Heroic as Flames Engulfed a Home
October 19, 2014
"Call 911!"
It's a terrifying scene: a home erupting in flames in Fresno, California, on Saturday as residents feebly try to fight the fire with a garden hose.
"My daddy's in there!" a woman can be heard screaming off camera.
"Call 911!" others yell.
Then, 50 seconds into the video, the man who will become a hero steps into view.
For many long seconds, it seems as if the man trapped in the home won't be rescued.
The inferno intensifies, sending people running...
...and the mystery man comes sprinting out of the blaze, carrying the trapped man on his shoulder.
The man who had been trapped looks weak and stunned as he is helped out of the smoke and into the fresh air.
Watch the whole thing below:
The fire likely started in the duplex's garage, firefighters said, and the residents did not immediately call 911 but instead tried to put out the fire themselves, the Fresno Bee reported.
The rescuer appeared to "come out of nowhere,” Beth Lederach, the woman who recorded the video, told the Bee. “He just calmly walked right in there and then came walking right back out with this guy.”
Authorities did not release the name of the rescuer or the man who was rescued, who apparently needed an oxygen tank for preexisting respiratory issues, the Bee reported.
The fire caused an estimated $100,000 in damage to the duplex and the neighboring unit, but no one was seriously injured, authorities said.
