President Barack Obama has been “perhaps the worst president we’ve had on clamping down on the press,” comedian Bill Maher said on his HBO show Friday.
Speaking on the issue of government surveillance and press freedom, Maher remarked, “I don’t understand why he is perhaps the worst president we’ve had on clamping down on the press.”
“He’s used the Espionage Act more than any other president, right?” he asked documentary filmmaker Laura Poitras.
Poitras answered in the affirmative, claiming Obama has used the law nine times.
Maher admitted there “some secrets” that the government needs to keep, but wondered what “line” the government should walk in order to maintain the trust of the American people.
Poitras said she would start by closing Guantanamo Bay and establish commissions to “talk about torture.” Watch the rest of the discussion below via HBO:
