A high school in Madison Heights, Michigan, was put on a brief lockdown last week after a man was spotted walking nearby with a rifle slung over his shoulder. Open carry is legal in the state of Michigan, but police in the area still responded to calls from startled school administrators and attempted to talk to the gun rights activist.

The police-involved confrontation quickly grew tense as the activist, identified as Shawn Nixon of the Hell’s Saints open carry group, refused to answer any questions and lectured officers.
“How long are you going to be out here today?” an officer asked Nixon, according to a video uploaded on YouTube.
“The funny thing about you asking me a question is I’m not going to answer it,” Nixon responded. “Anything I say can and will be used against me in a court of law, right?”
An officer made it clear that they were not arresting him, but it didn’t help calm the situation down.
At one point, Nixon started yelling as a nearby officer rested his hand near his gun.
“Time out! I’m talking now! That shiny little badge on his chest doesn’t give him any more rights than I have! Actually, you all work for me and the taxpayers right? So, you come over here with your hand on your gun, that’s reason for me to think that you feel ill-will towards me.”
“If I were to do the same thing, you’d probably pull your gun out and point it at me, am I right?” he added. “I’m talking to you, tough guy.”
When police told the man that school administrators called them and asked that he not be allowed on school property, the man argued further, saying it was public property owned by the taxpayers.
Fortunately, the situation ended peacefully. It seems police did not arrest the man or charge him with any crimes.
