Life Is a Wonderful Thing': Pregnant Woman Who Fled Brussels Attacks Pens Letter to Unborn Child

One Belgian woman who survived the Tuesday Brussels attack penned an emotional letter to her unborn child following the harrowing ordeal.

Sneha Mehta, 28, who is 16 weeks pregnant, had just flown from Abu Dhabi to Brussels with her husband, Sameep, when the bombs exploded and the ceiling began collapsing in on them, according to CNN.

"I absolutely didn't know which direction to run in," Sneha told CNN, revealing that at that moment in time, she truly thought she might die there at the airport alongside her husband.

But the two managed to escape as they made their way to the parking garage, and Sneha said that she knew they would survive for their baby's sake.

"I knew for sure," Sneha told CNN. "I knew for sure."

The couple arrived at Sint Augustinus hospital and Sneha had an ultrasound, which showed her healthy baby sucking its thumb. After the emotional ordeal, Sneha said that she felt inspired to write her unborn child a letter, according to ITV.com.

"Hi sweetheart. I don't know if we already acknowledged this with you in person, but when you were 16 weeks old, mum and dad were at an explosion at Brussels Airport," the letter reads. "And no matter where humanity is today, I just want to tell you that life is a wonderful thing, and the world is really full of remarkable people. You didn't just give mum and dad faith and reason to live, you gave us the awareness and presence of mind like never before. I felt more alive than I ever have, and I knew I had to protect you, so I was calm, composed and fully aware that we will survive."

Sneha also said that when she and Sameep reached the hospital and saw the image of their baby sucking its thumb and "doing [its] general acrobatics," that "all the mistrust, hate and angst for the terrorist attack vaporised."

"I do hope with all my heart that you are born into a better world, and if not, then you do absolute best to make it that," the letter reads. "You are absolutely precious to us, and have already been a hero today."
