Former New York City mayor hits sanctuary cities: ‘You should obey the law’

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg criticized the concept of sanctuary cities Tuesday during a panel discussion on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

Asked about his views on sanctuary cities — cities that don’t enforce federal immigration law — by economic analyst Steve Rattner, Bloomberg replied that "you cannot, Steve, have everybody deciding which laws they should obey."

"The law is the law," Bloomberg said. "You should obey the law and if you don't like the law, get your legislative body to change the law."

Bloomberg added that “society breaks down if we can all decide what's right and what's wrong, can’t do that. We have a system of laws, [you] have to live with it.”

Current New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is a proponent of sanctuary cities. During his time as mayor of the United States' largest city, Bloomberg was an advocate of immigration reform, calling for a more open process and a path to citizenship for some immigrants in the country illegally.

CNN notes that there is “no single definition for a sanctuary city,” and the jurisdictions that are called sanctuary cities cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to varying degrees.
