During remarks to pro-choice activists on Wednesday evening, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) called President Donald Trump a “disgusting, poor excuse of a man.”
At a gala held by Emily’s List, a PAC that seeks to elect pro-choice Democratic women, Waters mourned former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and said that during Trump’s presidency, “my role, my mission, and responsibility is to oppose, object, fight this man and resist every step of the way.”
"We will not allow ourselves to be shut up or shut down by anyone, especially this disgusting, poor excuse of a man who's now the president of the United States of America," Waters said.
Waters, 78, said that because of her “resistance” to Trump she has been “adopted by thousands of millennials” and they call her “Auntie Maxine.” She also bragged about her increased Twitter following.
Waters called for groups like Emily’s List to register more Democrats to vote.
“We must take our anger, our pain, our collective strength, to right this wrong, to resist this tyranny, and to save our democracy from a man whose immoral character and distorted thinking are an imminent threat to the future of our nation,” she said.
Waters said she has "decided to put my career on the line" to “resist” Trump.
“I've decided that no matter those who do dislike what I'm doing, no matter those who disagree with me, I feel absolutely certain that this country deserves better than Donald Trump," she said.
Waters reiterated her call for Trump to be impeached if there is evidence that he colluded with the Russians during the 2016 presidential election.
“I am not a fan of the word impeach, but I want him impeached,” she said. “That’s what he deserves.”
She concluded by telling the gala to “stay woke.”
