Elders in a Pakistani village ordered a 17-year-old girl be raped, after her brother was accused of raping another young girl, CNN reported Thursday.
Police of the town of Muzaffarabad arrested 20 after the two assaults took place, according to the department's reports, which state that it all started with a mother complaining to a village elder that her 12-year-old daughter had been raped.
According to the mother of the girl, her daughter was out cutting grass when the suspect raped her. The young girl reported the rape to her mother, who then went to the village elder to complain. In response, the elders demanded that the rapist's 17-year-old sister be raped in return.
The local police report stated that the teen's “mothers and sisters all protested this but the elders brought out their guns and threatened to kill them.”
Muzaffarabad Station House officer Rashid Faheem told CNN that investigations were still ongoing and that more raids as a result of the rapes were to be expected.
CNN did not release the identities of anyone currently being investigated.
This is not the first time a village sentenced a girl to rape for a family member's crime.
According to CNN, in 2002, a Pakistani tribal court ordered that a girl be gang raped after her 12-year-old brother was accused of having sex with a girl from another tribe. The "honor revenge" sentence was carried out immediately.
"They decided I should be punished against my brother's crime," Mai, the victim of the gang rape, said. "They immediately acted upon that decision and dragged me out. That was the hardest moment of my life."
Mai told CNN that she received death threats warning her about going to police about the rape.
