Music celebrity donates $500K to Harvey victims, openly weeps at carnage during televised interview

Ellen DeGeneres revealed on her show, "Ellen," Thursday that pop star Miley Cyrus and her non-profit organization, The Happy Hippie Foundation. donated a half-million dollars to the victims of Hurricane Harvey.

"I want to put a spotlight on The Happy Hippie foundation, because that is your foundation, and you do so much good," DeGeneres said, during an interview with Cyrus. "Miley has just told us backstage that she's donating $500,000 to Hurricane Harvey relief."

Smiling, DeGeneres added, "You're amazing."

Cyrus's motivation behind the donation

Once DeGeneres brought up the havoc wreaked by Harvey, Cyrus began weeping openly and admitted that the hurricane's devastation was a difficult topic for her to discuss without choking up.

"I can't really talk about it," she wept. "It just really makes me just really upset."

Empathizing with the victims of Harvey, Cyrus said, "My grandma’s sitting here. My mom’s here, and I go home to my seven dogs. If I didn’t have that anymore, it’d just be really hard."

The child actress-turned-songtress added, "I’m really happy to help anyway that I can, and I hope people understand and can put themselves in those people’s shoes, and just know what it’s like to have everything taken away from you."
