Freedom Caucus Republican will request investigation into Mueller — here's why

Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) says he will request an investigation into how special counsel Robert Mueller is spending his budget in his investigation into Russian election interference and alleged collusion.

Here's why he wants Mueller investigated

Meadows said that he would ask the Government Accountability Office to audit the finances of the investigation.

"There will be a request from us to audit the financial resources of this investigation," Meadows explained. "It is certainly within the parameters. It is appropriated funding from Congress."

Meadows sits on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and has been an outspoken supporter of Trump's policies.

Mueller has reportedly spent $7 million in his investigation, which has netted 23 indictments. He is already required to produce a public expense report every six months.

Meadows has threatened to hold Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in contempt, and even said he would support impeachment if Rosenstein didn't cooperate with congressional subpoenas.

'Witch hunt!'

Many other supporters and allies of the president have called for the special counsel to be investigated for alleged conflicts of interest.

A bipartisan group of members of Congress have drawn up a bill to protect Mueller from the possibility that Trump might try to fire him. Trump has said that he is not interested in doing so, despite his constant tweeting critical of the investigation, which he calls a "witch hunt."

Here's Meadows criticizing the Justice Department Thursday

"I'm not seeing a whole lot of difference in the Trump administration DOJ and the Obama administration DOJ in terms of them giving documents," he told Lou Dobbs.
